Blaser were awarded the title of Doctor Honoris Causa by Dean Lewis\, president of the University of Bordeaux after their praises by Andréas Bikfalvi (team 1) and Philippe Lehours (team 4) respectively. \nHonoris Causa\nThe title of Doctor Honoris Causa is awarded to foreign personalities to distinguish them for their contribution to the arts\, literature\, science and technology as well as to France or the establishment that grants the title. \nIn the margin of this event\, Philippe Lehours organized a seminar the day before around Martin J. Blaser (The microbiota as seen by the experts) and Andreas Bikfalvi organized the day after around Michel L. Tremblay. SUMMARY:Interdisciplinary seminar Oncosphère - Charles Dupin et Julian Boutin
DESCRIPTION:Charles Dupin and Julian Boutin\, Team 08 – Genetic Biotherapies and Oncology (BioGO) will be speaking on June 15 at 12:00 p.m. as part of Oncosphere‘s interdisciplinary seminars via videoconference. \nVideo conferencing link. \n  \n Charles Dupin\, PH \n  Radiothérapie potentialisée par un précurseur de l’hème dans le glioblastome. \nLa radiothérapie est un traitement indispensable du glioblastome\, tumeur cérébrale primitive. Les chirurgiens utilisent depuis une vingtaine d’années un précurseur de l’hème pour visualiser la tumeur en per opératoire. Son accumulation spécifique dans le glioblastome pourrait être utilisée pour sensibiliser la radiothérapie. \nNous avons exploré cette question de la radiosensibilisation in vitro sur des cellules dérivés de patients s’auto-organisant en sphéroïdes. Pour aller plus loin\, des souris imunodéprimées\, implantées en intracérébral ont été irradiées. L’efficacité de ce précurseur de l’hème pour radiosensibiliser a été testé. \n  \n Julian Boutin\, PHU \nThérapie génique anti-cancer par CRISPR-Cas9. \nLa technologie CRISPR-Cas9 permet une très grande efficacité d’édition génique. Ce système pourrait constituer une nouvelle arme anti-cancer très efficace. Des résultats très prometteurs ont été obtenus dans des approches ex vivo pour modifier des lymphocytes (CAR T cells). Nous proposons d’utiliser cette technologie pour modifier le métabolisme tumoral de la biosynthèse de l’hème dans le modèle du cancer de la prostate. Le but est de proposer une alternative thérapeutique innovante: potentialiser les effets de la photothérapie dynamique en l’associant à une thérapie génique.

SUMMARY:Donation of Noéline’s parents to the MIRCADE team for the research on diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma (DIPG)
DESCRIPTION:The association “Noeline\, my daughter\, my battle” was created to raise funds to allow Noeline\, 9 years old\, diagnosed with a diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma (DIPG)\, to follow an innovative treatment in clinical trial in the United States. Unfortunately\, Noeline passed away on March 22\, 2022\, 8 months after her diagnosis. As Noeline could not benefit from this treatment\, her parents decided to donate the funds collected to GITC research. Thus\, on June 17\, 2022\, theteam 06 – MIRCADE (Methods and Innovations for Research on Childhood Cancers)\, led by Christophe Grosset received a check for nearly 21 000 € from the association. DESCRIPTION:Andreas Bikfalvi\, Head of Team 01 – Tumor and Vascular Biology Laboratory. \n“The notion of Truth in the Biomedical Sciences” \nThe notion of truth has been debated extensively by philosophers and scientists alike for centuries. Relativist and absolutist/objectivist philosophies have a complete different understanding of the value attached to this notion. In this presentation\, I will discuss a number of issues related to the notion of truth in the biomedical sciences. I will first lay out different meanings and forms of truth and then discuss how this relates to the notion of causality. I will then describe how the biomedical science produces “truth” and lay down the different ways to achieve this (induction\, causal inference\, falsification\, Baysian approach\, etc..). \nI will then illustrate this by citing examples from the medical history and present-day biomedical research related to infectious disease\, vascular biology and cancer research. I will then show that a strong relativist epistemology is incompatible with the way biomedical science obtains knowledge. DESCRIPTION:Sabine Colnot\, Centre de Recherche des Cordeliers\, Paris\, will speak on June 28 at 3:00 pm\, amphitheater 11\, Carreire campus. \nInvited by Violaine Moreau\, team leader of theTeam 03 – Liver Cancers and Tumor Invasion. \n“CRISPR-Cas9-engineered mice developing liver cancers with beta-catenin mutation: towards a better understanding of liver carcinogenesis” \nOne third of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) have mutations activating beta-catenin signaling. We definitely showed that these mutations are oncogenic in mice (Loesch et al.\, J Hepatol 2022)\, and are responsible for the development of HCC and mesenchymal hepatoblastoma. This mouse model and a previous one obtained through a loss of function of Apc are valuable preclinical models to better understand why a large subset of beta-catenin activated HCCs are resistant to immunotherapies. Our work further supports the hypothesis that they could be treated based on their metabolism (Gougelet et al.\, Gastroenterol 2019; Senni et al.\, Gut 2019). Lastly\, the CRISPR-Cas9 strategy appears to be an easy-to-use approach to investigate the oncogenic function of specific mutations in HCC.

During the COVID-19 pandemic\, Dr. Chan began to investigate problems relevant to finding the origins of the SARS-CoV-2 virus and in parallel spearheaded the development of the COVID-19 CoV Genetics (covidcg.org) browser for scientists worldwide to rapidly track virus lineages and mutations by locations and date ranges of interest. Her talk will focus on what we know about the origins of COVID. The seminar should be very interesting for everyone.

DESCRIPTION:Anthony Bouter\, UMR5248 CBMN\, Bordeaux and Frédéric Saltel\, U1312 BRIC\, Bordeaux will speak at the Oncosphere’s interdisciplinary seminars the 7 septembre at 12pm\,conference room at IBGC and videoconference. \n \nFrédéric Saltel\nBRIC INSERM 1312\, Team 03 – Liver Cancers and Tumor Invasion. \n\n\nCancer cells transfer invasive properties through tracks\, a novel collagen-associated extracellular vesicle entity \nMetastasis is the leading cause of cancer-related deaths. During this process\, tumor cells acquire invasive and migratory capacities in order to invade the surrounding tissues. To achieve this\, the tumor microenvironment including the extracellular matrix (ECM) is altered to facilitate cancer cell proliferation and dissemination. Extracellular vesicles (EVs)\, such as exosomes or migrasomes\, are already known to induce pro-tumor features such as migration\, promoting tumor development and metastasis formation. Here we highlight a new type of EVs\, referred as tracks\, released by cancer cells during migration and specifically attached along collagen fibers. These tracks\, identified by discoidin receptor 1 (DDR1) enrichment\, are promoted when cell-ECM interactions are increased\, such as in tumors. We characterized these tracks\, their ultrastructure as well as their molecular composition in terms of proteins and nucleic acids\, showing that they are different from classical EVs known so far. Moreover\, these tracks are very stable structures and can be internalized by surrounding cells. After internalization\, they modify the differentiation status and the phenotype of recipient cells\, promoting epithelial to mesenchymal transition\, matrix degradation and invasion. \nThus\, we identified a new class of collagen-associated EVs\, tracks\, that play a role in cell-cell communication by transferring invasive properties.
