{"id":52580,"date":"2026-09-04T12:49:31","date_gmt":"2026-09-04T10:49:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bricbordeaux.com\/2026\/09\/4-bric-projects-awarded-inca-funding-under-the-plbio2026-program\/"},"modified":"2026-09-04T13:37:46","modified_gmt":"2026-09-04T11:37:46","slug":"4-bric-projects-awarded-inca-funding-under-the-plbio2026-program","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bricbordeaux.com\/en\/2026\/09\/4-bric-projects-awarded-inca-funding-under-the-plbio2026-program\/","title":{"rendered":"4 BRIC projects awarded INCa funding under the PLBIO2026 program"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cancer.fr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The National Cancer Institute (INCa)<\/a> has announced the results of the PLBIO 2026 call for proposals\u2014Biology and Cancer Sciences: 54 basic research projects have been funded to advance the fight against cancer.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For more than 20 years, PLBIO has been one of INCa\u2019s flagship programs, supporting ambitious projects, promoting multidisciplinary approaches, and encouraging the exploration of new scientific avenues\u2014all of which are essential for future advances.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By funding this research, the National Cancer Institute is investing in world-class research\u2014one of the pillars of the 2021\u20132030 Decade-Long Strategy to Combat Cancer\u2014that can shed light on the mechanisms of cancer, lead to the development of new tools, and open up new diagnostic and therapeutic avenues.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\ud83d\udc4f Congratulations to the 54 winners; Our project aims to understand how collagen-rich fibrotic niches within the tumour microenvironment support glioblastoma stem cells and promote tumour progression and treatment resistance. The goal is to identify new therapeutic vulnerabilities and develop strategies to disrupt these protective interactions between tumour cells and their microenvironment.<br\/>The project, led by Dr Ahmad Charanek (INSERM U1312, BRIC), will be conducted in collaboration with <strong>Dr Audrey Burban<\/strong> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ibgc.cnrs.fr\/la-recherche\/glioblastoma-metabolism-gbmetabo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">IBGC, CNRS UMR 5095<\/a>), <strong>Dr Gilles Guichard<\/strong>, and <strong>Dr Emmanuelle Thinon<\/strong> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.chembiona.cnrs.fr\/laboratoire\/institut-de-chimie-biologie-des-membranes-des-nano-objets-cbmn-umr-5248\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CBMN, CNRS UMR 5248<\/a>). The project benefits from funding of \u20ac778,220, primarily dedicated to personnel recruitment and operating costs required to carry out the research.    <\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em><strong>Tracking Metastasis: A New Clue in How Breast Cancer Spreads<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Metastasis remains the leading cause of death in breast cancer. Our research shows that moving tumor cells leave behind tiny membrane fragments on collagen fibers, a kind of &#8220;trail&#8221; called ColTracks. These trails can transform neighboring, previously harmless cells into invasive ones capable of spreading. We now aim to understand how these trails work and identify the key molecules involved, while also studying patient samples. This new mechanism could lead to biomarkers and therapeutic targets to help slow breast cancer progression. Our project focuses on its interaction with myelin, a lipid-rich substance that surrounds nerve fibers. <br\/>We aim to understand how tumor cells use components of myelin and how these interactions may promote tumor invasion.<br\/>Supported by \u20ac829,224 in funding over 48 months for personnel and operating expenses, the project is carried out in collaboration with <strong>Thomas Daubon<\/strong> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ibgc.cnrs.fr\/la-recherche\/glioblastoma-metabolism-gbmetabo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CNRS UMR 5095\/ University of Bordeaux<\/a>) and <strong>Michel Salzet<\/strong> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.laboratoire-prism.fr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Inserm U1192 \/ University of Lille<\/a>).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>Integrative spatial multi-omics for the discovery of metabolic vulnerabilities in cutaneous carcinomas.<\/em><\/strong><strong><em><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Reprogramming of energy metabolism is a hallmark of tumor initiation and progression. While well-established in many cancers, metabolic rewiring in cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (cSCC) and its precursor actinic keratosis (AK) remains largely unexplored.
