Open Day: The general public at the heart of digestive cancer research

On January 31, 2026, we opened our doors to the general public at our premises in the BBS (Bordeaux Biology Health) building on the University of Bordeaux campus.

On this occasion, nearly 70 participants attended the Bordeaux Institute of Oncology (BRIC) to discover one of the largest public cancer research laboratories in Bordeaux (Inserm – University of Bordeaux), learn about research and innovations in digestive cancers, talk with scientific teams, and gain a better understanding of how research is conducted in close proximity to patients.

A day full of discussions and discoveries

Throughout the day, visitors were able to attend presentations by our director Frederic Saltel on Cancer Research/Care and Innovations in the Region, as well as popular science seminars, recordings of which are available below.

Visitors were also able to tour our laboratories and participate in interactive workshops: “The Superpowers of Cells: Observations of Living Cells,” “The Journey of a Sample: From Biopsy to Treatment,” “Tumors in 3D,” “Color-Coded Treatment Resistance,” and “Escape Game.” These proposals were a great success. Thank you to all the speakers!

Several popular science posters were also displayed to stimulate discussion, along with a practical demonstration of public/private interactions at the “From Research to Innovation” stand, attended by the start-up Believer and the OncoProt platform.

Researchers, clinicians, and technical research staff shared their commitment with enthusiasm and a spirit of teaching, in a friendly atmosphere that was accessible to all. These discussions provided an opportunity to address recent advances in research, techniques used in the laboratory, current challenges in digestive oncology, and the essential role of translational research, from the laboratory to the patient.

Acknowledgments

We would like to express our sincere thanks to Marilyne Moze La Droite, coordinator of initiatives for people with cancer, and Marie Daspas, director of the League Against Cancer – Gironde Committee, for their presence and valuable involvement throughout the day.

A big thank you also to all visitors for their curiosity, questions, and interest in research.

Thanks to the University of Bordeaux, which funded the printing of the posters through the #SAPS (Science With and For Society) label.
